Ebook About
Tryouts are well underway at King’s Row for a spot on the prodigious fencing team, and scrappy fencer Nicholas isn’t sure he’s going to make the grade in the face of surly upperclassmen, nearly impossibly odds, and his seemingly unstoppable roommate, the surly, sullen Seiji Katayama. It’ll take more than sheer determination to overcome a challenge this big! From the superstar team of C.S. Pacat (The Captive Prince) and fan-favorite artist Johanna the Mad comes the second volume of this acclaimed, dynamic series.

Book Fence Vol. 2 Review :

I think it’s interesting that this volume advances the story through the ongoing competition at Kings Row to decide who’s going to be on the high school boarding school’s fencing team and yet also feels like nothing of note happens at all.The story starts with the day 2 matches and the first one we see is between Aiden and Seiji. It shows the reason why Aiden is on the fencing team even though he never shows up to practice and we learn HOW he fences, which is to say, a bit dirty. He likes riling up his opponents and Seiji is too put together and stoic, so easily rises to the bait. I like that we see here the differences in how Seiji and Nicholas handle someone like Aiden.Aiden might not be the MAIN character in this series, but I am fascinated by him and what his relationship is with his childhood friend Harvard. I think Aiden might have an unrequited love for him? It’s cute to see them in their down time just hanging out. What’s interesting here is that Aiden is the only explicitly“out” character in the series so far and is known by all to be a playboy on campus who leaves a lot of broken hearts behind him.We don’t know about Seiji but we get to see a very young Seiji here in this volume who is SO CUTE. I wonder about his relationship with the country’s #1, Jesse Coste. They’ve been in the same competition circuit since they were kids, and Seiji deliberately choosing to attend Kings Row instead of Exton where Jesse went is an interesting decision. I guess we’ll find out the reasoning for that at some point.By now we know that somehow Jesse and Nicholas are related but what does Jesse know? Does he know that Nicholas exists or is Nicholas the dirty secret their father likes to keep hidden away? Does their father even know about Nicholas? Considering the wealth of money Jesse has at his disposal to be the best fencer in the country, and Nicholas did not, would this mean also that the father isn’t sending cash to Nicholas and his mother as child support? Well, I’m assuming Nicholas’s mother is alive. There has been no mention of whether she’s alive or dead so far. There’s a lot of questions surrounding who knows what in this volume and I want answers.I think this volume was an okay one. We see a little bit more of the characters and see a little bit more fencing, but I want much more character development. You know how in anime there are episodes that seemingly do nothing because it takes, like, 10 episodes to show one fight? This kind of feels like that, even though I wouldn’t necessarily call it all JUST filler. However, I would really like for this to start moving along please.
Oh my word, this was such a damn treat. I love these characters and this graphic novel series so very much. Vol. 1 completely stole my heart last year, and Vol. 2 was a wonderful addition. Even though the wait for Vol. 3 to get published is going to maybe be the death of me.This bind up really focuses on how all of the fencers are still in tryouts, therefore they are being ranked based off their wins verses the other candidates. Harvard and Seiji are at the very top, while Nicholas is trying to climb his way back up the rankings. But we get to see so many match ups in this volume and I was absolutely living for it.I just love this storyline and seeing all the students at this boarding school trying to live out their dreams with fencing. The conversations are perfect. The art is a new masterpiece on every page. The friendships and brewing relationships are beyond words. The only real negative thing I can say is that sometimes the pacing feels so very slow. But I have no doubts that it’s absolutely going to be worth the wait!
