This cute novella seemed disjointed, between a trip home to meet Vic’s family, a fight with Vic’s ex-lover with consequences, a somewhat random meeting with two of Bryce’s other characters from a different series, a library ghost, and the Brother Jubal storyline. That’s a lot for a full-length novel, not to say a novella. The crossover seemed to be nothing but a teaser to get people interested in a series with Brice writing as Gail Z. Martin, which readers of MM romance may have little interest in. She also name-drops a pair from yet another of her Martin series, again with only tangential interest to MM readers. I feel like these might be of interest if they were MM, but as you can’t even find them under the Morgan Brice name, they’re just irritating. I’d much rather see a Witchbane tie-in. Because of all this, the “main” Brother Jubal story that could have been really interesting with more attention and effort was given short shrift and ended up as an “also ran.” Vic and Simon’s relationship didn’t really grow in any meaningful way, and the sex was such an afterthought that it should have been skipped (except it has to be included or it loses readers). If this series continues, Brice/Martin needs to pace herself. Oh, how I love Simon and Vic! Even though I read this novella out of order, it was so entertaining. For a short story it packed a lot heat and had enough going on to be intriguing and gripping at the same time.D'Amato clan welcomed Simon with open arms. We get to see where Vic gets his looks as well as personality traits. And we also get a glimpse into Simon's relationship with his mother who would make Snow Queen look like Mary Poppins. There are moments full of holiday cheer and romance but never fear murder does not take vacation, and soon Simon and Vic are in the midst of very serious investigation involving dark magic, old legends and desperate people. Another lovely tidbit is that Vic's ex-partner shows up with such an extreme case of sour grapes! Made my day! Plus Simon's sight showed all was not so simple with Nate, and in the end he got his just deserts!This was a wonderful novella full of magic, spirits, friends and Simon and Vic finally settling in and making a home together. Loved it! I hope there will be many more Vic and Simon adventures!!! Highly recommend!
